This will only become truer as work becomes more global, talent pools become more fluid, and knowledge work is more commoditized. Since many people today will have entire careers without ever meeting their employers or clients in person, their online profile must speak for them.

The key to your professional success

You know they will “Google you.” Hiring managers, potential business partners, and possible client leads all want to know who they’re dealing with. And probably, you’ll Google them too.

The power of a professional profile lies in its ability to communicate your personal brand, expertise, and professional journey at a glance, making it an indispensable tool in attracting the right opportunities and connections.

In order to have impact in your career, you’ll need to connect with people. Having incredible skills and ambition won’t help if others aren’t interested or impressed enough to connect with you and explore opportunities.

Some methods explored in this article are having featured articles about yourself, securing written interviews, getting a wiki page, and creating professional social media profiles.

If you think you don’t have enough experience or “importance” to be featured in articles and wiki pages, keep reading to learn how.

How to build a stellar professional brand

First, have realistic expectations. Building a great professional brand will take 6 to 12 months, and keeping it growing will be a career-long effort. But, it’s an essential investment for anyone forging their own professional career or entrepreneurial path.

Get over self-promotion shyness

For many, the idea of self-promotion carries an uncomfortable weight, akin to boasting or vanity. However, in the context of building your professional brand, getting over this shyness is not just beneficial—it’s essential. Embracing self-promotion is about recognizing the value you offer and being willing to share it with the world. It’s not about arrogance; it’s about providing a service or skill that others genuinely need. After all, if you don’t believe in your value, why should anyone else?

How to create professional social media profiles

The easiest place for most people to start is with social media. And most likely, your social accounts currently rank the highest for your name.

Start new if necessary: If your existing accounts are very personal, you might consider creating new ones for your professional brand. However, it’s a better idea to clean your existing ones. Remember that even your friends and family are potential advocates for you and your services, and they’ll think differently about you if you keep a professional image.

Choose the Right Platforms: LinkedIn is a must-have for professional profiles, but also consider other platforms relevant to your industry. For example, X (Twitter) is still okay for quick updates and networking, while Instagram can be perfect for creative professionals to showcase their portfolios. Facebook offers strong privacy protection tools that let you keep a professional public brand, while still sharing personal posts with friends.

Consistent Professional Image: Use a professional photo across all your profiles. This doesn’t necessarily mean a stiff headshot; choose an image that conveys professionalism but also lets your personality shine. Ensure your username is professional and recognizable, and try to keep it consistent across different platforms. Remini is a nice app that can generate professional-quality headshot photos from humble selfies.

Craft a Compelling Bio: Your bio should succinctly highlight your professional expertise, interests, and achievements. Tailor it to speak directly to your target audience, whether that’s potential employers, clients, or peers in your industry. Use keywords relevant to your field to improve your visibility in search results.

Highlight Your Work and Achievements: Use the features of each platform to your advantage. LinkedIn allows for a detailed career history, endorsements, and recommendations; Instagram and Pinterest are great for visual portfolios; Twitter can highlight your engagement with current industry discussions. Regularly update your profiles with new achievements, projects, or roles.

Engage with Your Industry: Social media is not just a billboard; it’s a two-way street. Follow leaders in your field, join industry-related groups, and participate in discussions. Share content that adds value, whether it’s your insights, articles, or commentary on industry trends. Engagement demonstrates your ongoing commitment to your professional development and industry involvement.

Privacy Settings and Content Review: Review your privacy settings to control what’s visible to the public versus your connections. Additionally, go through your profiles and remove or hide any content that doesn’t align with your professional image. Remember, everything you post or share on social media contributes to your online reputation.

Consistent Activity: An outdated or inactive profile can be almost as detrimental as having no profile at all. Regularly update your profiles with new experiences, share relevant content, and engage with others. Consistent activity keeps your profile visible and demonstrates your active participation in your professional sphere.

How to get featured in articles

Have you ever wondered how up-and-coming professionals get featured in articles? Articles are a great form of exposure even for young professionals with limited experience because nearly everyone has done (or is starting) something interesting enough to write about.

The standard way to get featured is to first ensure your social profiles are in good shape, and then to establish relationships with the writers and editors for industry publications. This means finding email addresses and LinkedIn profiles for them, and introducing yourself in friendly and interesting ways.

A faster route is to work with PR companies that specialize in young professionals. These companies will already have relationships with publications and can secure a featured article on a topic of your choice.

How to get media interviews

Interviews are another excellent way to help graduates to get jobs and launch their career. That’s because an interview can be casual and simple, but demonstrates they have in-depth knowledge and are passionate about their field.

Media interviews can mean podcast interviews, video interviews, or simply written interviews. Just like getting featured articles, it takes some outreach to connect with media contacts and book an interview. Written interviews are the simplest form and a nice way to start if you have interview anxiety. Here, you simply respond in writing to a few questions, and your replies form the basis for a larger article.

Again, working with PR companies can accelerate the process and book you placements that are a good fit for your background and goals.

How to get a wiki page about yourself

An ideal thing for a young professional is to have a Wikipedia page about themselves to showcase their education, experience, and any other special skills.

However, Wikipedia has a notability standard which most young professionals would not qualify for. In short, they would have to be famous within their academic field or profession to qualify.

But Wikpedia is not the only “wiki” that can give you quality exposure. NotableWiki is an example of a wiki that any professional or small company could get a page on. Articles are still written and edited by professional editors, and the format is identical to Wikipedia, but its notability standard is not limited to nationally famous people.

How to start a professional blog

“Blogging” may sound very 2000-ish, but many students and young professionals are still getting their first jobs and built solid careers starting with their personal blogs.

In this context, a “professional blog” means a place where you regularly write short articles about a professional topic, written under your name and typically also revealing some of your unique personality.

Professional blogging works so well for several reasons:

  • Your articles can be seen by industry professionals and hiring managers. Even though you may not be a great writer, most professionals are too busy to write articles, giving you an advantage.
  • It demonstrates your passion for the topic and your willingness to put in extra effort to share your knowledge.
  • Over time you may continue your blog and it may bring unforeseen benefits in terms of professional connections or clients.
  • Blogging is easy to do if you’re interested in the topic, and it helps you to stay informed and eventually be perceived as an industry thought leader.

Whether true or false, what is said about men often has as much influence on their lives, and particularly on their destinies, as what they do.

Victor Hugo, Les Misérables

Example: Starting a great career with personal marketing

After graduating with a degree in psychology, Sally found herself facing the tough job market, especially for positions related to her passion for developmental child psychology. Instead of waiting for opportunities to come her way, Sally initiated a professional blog where she shared insights on new research in applied child psychology. She leveraged LinkedIn to distribute her posts, connecting with other professionals in her field. Recognizing the need to broaden her reach, Sally collaborated with a PR firm to get her articles published in health-related publications, boosting her visibility.

This strategic move paid off. Sally’s blog and articles resonated with many in her field, earning her recognition and invitations to webinars and discussions. Her proactive approach and visibility caught the eye of a national company seeking fresh talent with a passion for child psychology. She easily secured an interview because her strong presence on Google and blogging experience made her a top candidate for the type of work needed. Sally’s journey from a recent graduate to a recognized psychology professional exemplifies the power of proactively positioning yourself for success in today’s job market.
